Financial Aid Policy
An education from The Discovery School is an investment in your child’s future. We realize that education costs are a significant financial commitment and may be a challenge for some families. Discovery provides partial scholarships based on need.
Financial aid is available to current students and new applicants. All admission decisions are made without regard to financial aid. In order for your financial aid application to be considered, an application for admission must be on file at TDS. Discovery utilizes the SmartAid financial aid program. SmartAid provides an objective financial needs assessment directly to our administration. The application fee is $25.
Applications can be submitted online beginning in December. Partial scholarships are awarded, based on need, beginning in February/March and will be offered as part of the annual student contract process. Applications for financial aid submitted after the January 31 deadline may be considered if scholarship funds remain available.
How do I apply for financial aid?
All financial aid applicants must have a complete admissions application on file to be considered for financial aid. You may access the SmartAid application on line through our website. You must submit all financial documentation, including tax returns, to receive a final financial aid determination. All submissions are confidential and only reviewed by Discovery’s financial aid committee. Tax returns must be submitted and scholarships awards are contingent on tax returns submitted to SmartAid.
The Discovery School's SmartAid code is 14242.
How is need determined?
Financial need is determined by the school’s financial aid committee, which uses the confidential personal and financial information that is submitted by parents to SmartAid. Discovery is committed to making partial scholarships available to as many eligible applicants as possible.
What criteria is used in determining financial aid?
While the availability of school resources, the number of qualified applicants, and overall budgetary constraints influence financial aid decisions, Discovery is committed to making partial scholarships available to as many eligible applicants as possible. The financial aid committee may give preference for returning students and/or siblings of returning students. The financial aid committee may also give preference to students with prior Montessori/IB school experience and/or to students in levels where enrollment is low.
Additional criteria for Financial Aid consideration:
- Family must be in good financial standing with Discovery.
- Family must have submitted a signed enrollment agreement and deposit.
- Family must submit all required documentation through SmartAid.
How much financial aid may I expect to receive?
Each award is individualized, based on the demonstrated financial need of each applicant. Typically, only partial awards are given in order to assist as many eligible applicants as possible.
What if my financial situation changes?
Each year a family must reapply for financial aid. If the family’s financial circumstances remain the same, the school will make every effort to assist a family at the same level of aid.
Must I repay this award?
No, A financial award is used to offset the costs of our educational programs. These awards are scholarships made possible by donations to our annual fund. It is hoped that each recipient will consider a gift to the annual fund at an appropriate time in the future.
What if I am divorced or separated?
In the matter of separated or divorced parents, the financial aid committee will consider the assets of both natural parents, if living, before making any award, and cannot be bound by the assertion that the one parent has disclaimed responsibility for educational expenses. If either parent has remarried, we will consider the asset and income of the stepparent, always bearing in mind the obligation of that stepparent to his or her own natural born children. The non-custodial parent also must complete a parent’s financial statement through SmartAid.
Are decisions regarding admission and financial aid related?
All admission decisions are made without regard for financial need.
Only one parent works outside the home. Must both parents be employed to receive financial aid from Discovery?
In general, Yes, if all children in the family are in school. We also realize, however, that circumstances may make it impossible, or very difficult, for both parents to work outside the home in specific cases. All applicant’s can make a personal statement on the application to inform us of any extenuating circumstances you wish the financial aid committee to consider.
